Following Matthew Appleby’s (sub-editor of Horticulture Weekly and editor of Garden Retail) prediction last week of the new horticultural trend being to grow your own cut flowers, I asked Helen Johns of Thompson & Morgan for her recommendations.
“We have a fabulous climbing geranium called ‘Skyrocket’ (pictured left); we accidentally found out during trials that it makes a fabulous cut flower and is particularly pretty in posies. It also reaches 6 ft in a season.
We are also excited with our first Hardy Gerbera, ‘Landscape’, which flowers continually from spring until autumn. Each plant can produce 50 blooms per plant and the cut flowers last for up to 2 weeks in a vase.
A new Dahlia variety, Raspberry Riot’ is also stunning in borders and as a cut flower and the new rare double-flowered delphiniums have up to 50 florets per spike and flower twice in a season. The stems are short enough to make it suitable for containers and it is also an excellent cut flower.”
For even more fabulous flowering, and veg, varieties pop into www.thompson-morgan.com or call 0844 573 2020 for a colourful and inspirational catalogue.
