Laughter in the Rain

I am wondering how can I write this week’s gardening column without mentioning the rain? I can’t. I have even suffered a little from weather rage in the last week or so – I did a bit of quick research and found references to road rage, air rage and even desk rage but not weather rage – you read it here first!

I remember Tim Smit of the Eden Project and Lost Gardens of Heligan telling me that until he worked outdoors, he had no perception of how influential the weather was for some people and thought the forecast was just something to round off the News with.

For those of you who are kind enough to ask – yes, we are still working outside, there is always something to be done for those willing to do it! We just get through several changes of coats and leggings during the day. And of course I can always justify a day or two at home in the dry to write more books!

The week before Christmas I saw daffodils out in mid Wales, actually in full bloom and a lot of plants are well ahead of schedule as a result of the mild weather. But it’s not such good news for snowdrops. They are definitely not so abundant this year. They don’t realise it’s January and their time to shine – I’m sure they still think it’s October!

January is always a good time for Armchair Gardening – gathering numerous books, magazines and looking online for inspiration and ideas for your own plot in the coming year. Get yourself a good notebook and make three lists – 1) definite changes to be made this year, 2) hopeful changes and 3) changes to be made if I win the Lottery!

My own plans include getting a poly-tunnel, pursuing permaculture and finishing my next book, which will be how to include plants into your garden to benefit pets. Animals will naturally self medicate in the wild, choosing plants that provide the medicine they need. There are ways to replicate that in your garden to benefit your pets as well as yourself!

It promises to be another busy and exciting year – whatever the weather!
