Super Sprouts
Good news and bad news for Brussel sprout fans this year. The good news is that they should be tastier than usual due to the cold snap. Frequent frosting and thawing turns carbohydrates into sugars which makes them taste sweeter. The bad news is that they may be in short supply as high winds and water-logged fields have restricted harvesting.
The controversial little greens are extremely good for us too as, weight for weight, they contain 3 times as much vitamin C as oranges and the British Sprout Grower’s Association remind us that ‘A sprout isn’t just for Christmas, they are for Life’.
Wiki- Leeks
Leeks are also in demand at this time of year and spare a thought for the Really Welsh workers who have been out in the fields lifting the winter crops. To harvest, the leeks have been covered with fleece and lifted in large sections to be defrosted and trimmed indoors. Charlie Lightbown, Farm Manager for Really Welsh, said, “We have seen record sales for leeks this week; whilst brassicas and other root crops are likely to be in short supply leeks are very hardy and will withstand the very worst Welsh weather. They taste even better after a frost, so these should be our best yet!”
