If you are watching your waistline, check out the fabulous ‘Chocolate Cosmos’ (Cosmos atrosanguineus) with it’s beautiful rich dark maroon flowers that really do smell of chocolate. Heights range from 2 feet to 2.5 feet and to benefit from the fragrance, they’re best planted in generous drifts in the flowerbed or even in containers.  They grow readily from seed sowed in open ground from spring to summer and can also be bought as a perennial.   They will need protecting against the frost or in really cold areas, dig tubers out and store as you would dahlias.

Did You Know?  Cacao (or cocoa) beans were also once used as money; 100 beans could buy a slave or a rabbit would cost 4 beans, so ‘money did grow on trees’!  And the great Joan Rivers also knew the power of chocolate;  “My therapist told me I would feel better if I finished things; so far today I have finished a bag of Maltesers, a Twix and a box of After Eights and I feel better all ready.”
