As most schools break up this week, it’s a great time to encourage little green fingers to help out in the garden.
Teenagers may be a bit tricky to persuade as they associate apples, orange and blackberries with keeping in touch with each other rather than keeping in touch with nature but as I learnt whilst judging the primary schools for Blaenau Gwent in Bloom last week, younger children are much more keen to get their hands dirty! ‘Digging’ was unanimously the favourite task amongst the boys whilst the girls favoured planting.
There are lots of specially made tools and clothing available from good garden centres and even DIY stores now for young budding gardeners which will make it easier for them to join in.
Or have a look online at www.harrodhorticultural.com. They have a great choice including a child-sized fold up wheelbarrow and brush which will encourage little gardeners to clear up too.
